The numerous skits recall dialogue from 1970s blaxploitation era cinema. Each song contributes to this theme and scene, and both musically and lyrically, the album is effectively visual and focused. "The Vinyl Room" is a journey through the nightlife of this setting, and each of Sleepy's verses create imagery of urban nightclubs where lavishly dressed men and women drive Cadillacs, Lincolns, and Regals, dance elegantly, and live fantasies in luxurious VIP rooms. Using funky bass and guitars, lush strings, rich horns, and background female vocalists, ONP accurately portrays the sound of the 1970s. "The Vinyl Room" attempts to recapture the sound of 70s soul music, especially that of Sleepy Brown's primary stylistic influences, Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. In 1998, the team used the moniker Sleepy's Theme for their "The Vinyl Room" release, an album unlike any of their other projects. Organized Noize is among the greatest hip hop production teams ever, and the Atlanta trio is responsible for the infamous Dungeon Family sound on classic albums by OutKast, Goodie Mob, and their affiliates, as well as R&B hits by TLC and En Vogue. Overall Vinyl Room is definitely a must have if you consider yourself a fan of good soul music. The only problem I seem to have are the useless skits.they definitely mess up the flow of a great album, but since the quality of the album is so good they can be overlooked(not easily though). Sleepy Brown sounds like a new school Curtis Mayfield on some of these songs. The smoky baby maker Private Party is an 8 minute opus. From the excellent horns in 'Grind On' to the wonderful horn solo in 'Choked Out Saturday Nite' to the drums of Curse On You, this album is an all night jam. The album almost has a 'blunted' feel too it with its thick southern sound. But Vinyl Room has risen above the usual expectations and standards. Organized Noize and the Dungeon Family only gives us the quality 's become standard for them. A big band in the background and real instrumentation along with thumping bass and unique singing made this album an instant dirty south classic. Also now widely referred to as the "Down South Nate Dogg", Sleepy showed in 98 that he had the skills for a solo project. Pick up any DF release and Sleepy Brown is definitely found on that album. Sleepy Brown is the man known for his crooning on various Dungeon Family projects.
